Failed Suicide

At 41 I tried to commit suicide due to autistic burnout. I did not know that I was on the spectrum, also, I did not know I have ADHD and OCPD. Most of all, I was not even aware of the fact that Major Depression was the symptom of my unique mental setup….

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration and lack of interest in almost all activities. The condition may develop gradually or could be the effect of a recent traumatic event.

Depression affects both men and women indiscriminately, but it is more common among women than men according to nearly every study. Symptoms are often more severe for women. Some researchers have suggested that the reason why depression is so much more common among women than men may be because of hormonal changes.

Hormonal changes related to menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth could certainly make a woman more likely to experience depressive mood swings. Postpartum depression , which occurs following childbirth, is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and also the new responsibility of caring for a child.

On the other hand, recent studies have shown that men who get married or enter into any long-term relationship tend to get depressed more often than single men. Researchers theorize that once a man is in a committed relationship, he may lose his sense of purpose and feel less masculine. Married men also have the added stress of worrying about their families, which could put them at risk for depression.

Depression is not a “normal” part of aging, but many older adults do suffer from serious depression due to isolation, loneliness and lack of mental stimulation . Some older people even express feelings of depression due to the death of their spouse.

Depression is not a weakness and it can affect anyone. People who suffer from depression may find it difficult to function in every day life, but with proper treatment this condition is very treatable. Depression can be managed by counseling , medication or diet supplements . It’s important for people who are experiencing depressive symptoms for the first time to seek help from a mental health professional.
